EARLY KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION SOON

Early registration for next year’s kindergarten will be taking place in Marion County after Easter Break on March 28 and all children must be registered in their attendance area home school only.  Students will need to be 5 years by September 1 and bring to the registration their current immunizations, certified birth certificate, social security number, proof of residency, and information of several emergency contacts phone numbers.  Some immunizations needed to enter school cannot be given until after May 15.

Something new that enrolling children will need this year will be a Wellness Medical Exam as directed by Governor Manchin’s current legislation.  These will be conducted by children’s doctors prior to entering kindergarten and the results will be recorded on a form the doctors will have, which then will need to be turned into the schools. The exams costs will be covered.  More information about these Wellness Exams will be described in the newspaper soon.

HELP THE SCHOOL TRY FOR NEW COMPUTERS

Dear Family and Friends of Barrackville School,

We are asking for your help in a quest to win a grant to get new computers at Barrackville Elementary and Middle School.  This grant is through through the "Hamburger Helper/My Hometown Helper".  As a part of that grant, it is needed for folks to log onto the web site and to add a simple comment in support of Barrackville School purchasing those new computers.

Also, we would ask readers who would log in to please send this information to anyone that may help support this cause.   A big thank you from the students, community, and teachers at Barrackville Elementary and Middle School.

2nd GRADE ENTREPRENEURS

The second graders of Barrackville would like to thank all the school staff members, parents, students, and community for their help in making the trip to Charleston and making their participation in “The Lemonade Stand Project” a successful one.  Governor Manchin tasted their product and commented on how very good it was!

Their profit from sales at the Lemonade Stand was donated to The Marion County Animal Shelter.  Shelter representatives came to the school on Friday, and talked with the students about the Animal Shelter.

The students would like to thank Nancy Securro and her dog “Big Dog” and Nancy Smigock and her cats “Cassie”, “Cherise” for visiting the classroom!

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to two Barrackville 4th graders who did very well last weekend in the Federal Order of Eagles speech contest.  Students had to write a 3 minute speech about “Good, Flag, and Country”.  Claudia Sheets took 2nd place in the contest and Kailee Latocha took 1st place.

CHURCH AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The Barrackville United Methodist Church has begun a unique after-school program for kids in Barrackville.  “Bison for Christ” or BFC began on Wednesday, October 3 and will be held every Wednesday that school is in session from 3:30 to 4:30pm in the Old Stone Church.  It will be open for all students from Barrackville School, regardless of religious affiliation.

Children attending will receive an after school snack, followed by an opening with music in the church sanctuary, then a weekly lesson that is not doctrine-based.

All children attending must have a completed registration paper on file with the church.  Children will be getting these slips from the school in the near future.

Parents must be responsible for picking their children up promptly at 4:30pm each Wednesday.  For more information, contact church pastor Scott Ingleton at 366-8342.

TOO EARLY!

Parents are reminded to not send or bring their children to Barrackville School BEFORE 8:15am!  No staff members are available to supervise students before that time.  That also means that they should not be waiting outside on the school grounds before that time.

STUDENTS REQUIRED TO HAVE TB TESTS
Please take note of a change in West Virginia state law concerning the enrollment of students from outside of the state of West Virginia:  These students MUST have a TB test and have it read BEFORE being allowed to attend school in West Virginia.  Therefore it is encouraged for parents to get this done in the next few weeks so no school time will be lost.  Days missed will be days counted absent.

Free T.B. tests are given every Wednesday at the Marion County Health Department from 1:00-3:00pm.  They then must be read on the following Fridays at the Health Department from 1:00 - 3:00pm.  Their phone number for more information 366-3360.

T.B.  tests can also be obtained at the John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center on Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays from 8:00am to 3:00pm.  Their phone number is 363-2500.

FACULTY PAGES NOT WORKING

Around 2000, Barrackville School was one of the first to have their entire faculty build their own web pages.  As the computer age marches on, some companies bid adieu and leave the scene.  The company that has hosted that portion of our website has gone out of business.  That is the bad news.  The good news is that Marion County Schools will be moving to "web-based" teacher grade books, Grade Quick and their accompanying teacher - parent pages EdLine  As soon as that is up and running later in the 2006-07 school year, we hope to re-construct the important teacher portion of our web site.
